How to Start Worldbuilding Roundup
Last updated on July 14th, 2022 at 08:53 am
Worldbuilding is intense. For those of you who don’t know what it is, it involves creating a world specific to your story. It means a lot of dedication and attention to details. You have to think about whether you’re going to create a language and what kind of government you’re going to have. I could do an entire series on worldbuilding, but a lot of people have done that already. So, I’m going to direct you to a few of my favorites today. I hope they’re helpful. Be sure to come back, and let me know in the comments!
Mythcreants
Mythcreants is this great site that focuses on fantasy and sci-fi. They have an entire section on worldbuilding that’s worth checking out. Here’s their piece about getting started. If you feel like you’re onto more advanced worldbuilding, here’s an article for you. Honestly, I encourage you to just go to the worldbuilding section and explore.
Hello Future Me
Hello Future Me is this amazing YouTube channel that explores writing and worldbuilding. He’s also obsessed with Avatar: The Last Airbender, How to Train Your Dragon, and fixing Game of Thrones. It’s great. I suggest starting with his video on how empires get started and his video on fantasy and alien races. He’s also got videos on how empires work and how they fall. They’re extremely in-depth and absolutely worth watching. He’s also got a book on worldbuilding!
Ari Meghlen
I found Ari through Pinterest, and I like her. She has this series on worldbuilding that goes through various things that we don’t typically think about like seasons and animals. I recommend starting with economy and races. Check back in with her because she’s not done with her series yet.
Also, while we’re at it, here are some worldbuilding throwaways. The Write Life goes through the basics, and Patrica Wrede asks a variety of questions to help get you thinking.
For another roundup that includes resources about writing, check out my Game of Thrones post!
Thanks so much for including a link to my Worldbuilding series, reminds me I need to get back to completing it! lol
Of course! I’m glad you found my post. I enjoy your series a lot. Please finish it!
