How to Write a Blog Post

When I was first starting out as a blogger, I looked up how to write a blog post. I wanted to know what I was really supposed to do. And the results were disappointing. Most blog posts out there that explain how to create a blog post are all about physically creating one. You know, how to buy a domain, set up your website, and then start a new post in WordPress. Those posts are really about the catchy title with affiliate marketing.
So, now that I have experience under my belt, I’m going to explain how to actually write a blog post and what you need to know.
The Basics to Writing a Blog Post
First, let’s talk about the anatomy of a blog post. You need an introduction, multiple subheadings with content, and a conclusion that contains a call to action. Your introduction says what the post is about. Your subheadings break that topic down into easily readable chunks, Your conclusion wraps up your thoughts and states the purpose of what you’ve already said. That call to action can include things like asking your readers to sign up for your newsletter or purchase an e-book. You’ll also need a blog banner or some sort of image for your post.
Your blog post is going to focus on some sort of question that your readers will need an answer to. Think “10 Ways to Make Money Blogging” or “The Ultimate Guide to Planning a Wedding.”
What to Focus On
Even when you write your first blog post, you need to think about how you’re going to attract readers to your site. Typically, this is done through search engines. To get search engines to notice you, you need to be focusing on SEO. Do some keyword research through Moz or Google and figure out what your keyword should be before you even start. This will help you figure out your title and refine your topic. Make sure you’re organically sprinkling that keyword throughout your title, subheadings, and actual post.
People disagree on how long blog posts should be. Long-form content (1,000 to 2,000 words) can be better for SEO because search engines like comprehensive answers. Your post should be at least 300 words. My sweet spot tends to be between 500 and 700 words. Just make sure you’re providing a full answer to the question.
The Most Important Thing
You need to have quality content that is useful to your readers/potential clients. You want to give them value. You want them to come away feeling like they learned something.
Think about what your readers need to know. Dig deep, and think about all that knowledge you didn’t use to have. Did you always know how to properly groom a dog or when you should bring your car to the shop? Did you always know what to do when your kid started crying in the middle of the grocery store? No. So, no matter what your niche is, remember where you started, and write blog posts about that.
Having quality content can also help you to avoid keyword stuffing your blog post, a tactic that search engines do not like. You’ll be too focused on giving all the information you need to. That doesn’t mean not thinking about keywords (see above), but don’t go overboard.
There you go. Now you know how to write a blog post. Go forth into the world, and start writing.
